Private pharmaceutical corporations make billions of dollars on crucial life-saving drugs. Rather than protecting human life, these corporations focus on what makes them money. This means we’ve been left without crucial research into vaccines, including coronaviruses, and new antibiotics. In fact, private pharmaceutical corporations have actively stopped research into viruses similar to coronavirus because it wasn’t deemed profitable.
In 1916 Australia established its first ever public pharmaceutical company, Commonwealth Serum Laboratories (CSL). Before the federal Labor government privatised it in 1994, CSL achieved amazing things including:
- Early production of insulin for treatment of Australian diabetics (1923)
- Developing a tetanus vaccine (1938)
- Developing a combined vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough (1953)
- Rapid adoption and production of a polio vaccine (1956)
The privatised CSL now makes over $8 billion a year in revenue. In 1995, a study found that the ultimate cost to the Federal Government of the privatisation would be over $600 million, as the government was now forced to buy the crucial blood products that CSL produced. Now it’s clear that the ultimate cost is almost certainly much higher given that in 2009 the CSL produced the world’s first swine flu (H1N1) vaccine, of which the Federal Government was forced to spend over $139 million purchasing 21 million doses.
Meanwhile, Queensland Health spends $1 billion every year on drugs and clinical supplies, much of that money going into the profit margins of private pharmaceutical corporations. Australians pay $500 million a year too much on prescription drugs because of rips offs by private pharmaceutical corporations.
The Greens will:
Establish a Queensland Public Pharmaceutical Company that would:
- Focus on crucial research and production of vaccines, antibiotics, drugs and other supplies that private pharmaceutical corporations deem unprofitable, including potential future coronavirus vaccines.
- Work with universities and public medical research teams to produce new drugs, keeping the benefits, revenue and jobs in Queensland.
- Produce cheap generic drugs as an alternative supply for Queensland Health, reducing the amount of public money that goes into the pockets of private pharmaceutical corporations.
The QPPC would reduce drug costs for Queensland Health, produce life saving vaccines and antibiotics, and develop the state’s capacity to rapidly produce crucial vaccines in the future.
When the coronavirus vaccine is finally produced it will ultimately benefit private pharmaceutical corporations that profit off the hard work of publicly trained scientists and doctors - this should never happen again.
