Addressing school overcrowding

For several years I’ve been pushing the state government to develop a proper long-term plan for schools in the inner west (check out my speech in Parliament here for an example).

We’ve had some incredible wins in our advocacy against school overcrowding. We got a commitment for a new primary school, a new administration and classroom building for Indooroopilly State School, land acquired to expand Ironside State School and more. But it’s clear that school overcrowding is an ongoing issue, one which needs more than piecemeal planning.

I’m calling for a serious long term plan for inner west schools, one which properly engages with the schools and their communities.

Indooroopilly State High School

What’s happening now:

  • At Indooroopilly State High School, there’s finally been a masterplan developed for new buildings. But these plans are based on a school of 2,500 students, when there are 3,000 students already at ISHS.
  • There’s no actual funding in the state budget for new buildings at ISHS, and only detailed plans for one of four stages.

I’m calling for:

  • Expanding Stage 1 of the ISHS Masterplan by adding additional storeys to the planned building, and delivering it urgently.
  • A comprehensive and detailed plan of Stage 2-4 of the ISHS Masterplan released for consultation.
  • All 4 stages to be funded and delivered as soon as possible.

Toowong State School

What’s happening now:

  • There’s a new infrastructure plan for Toowong State School, but it’s rushed and not thought out.
  • The latest plan doesn’t have enough open play space for kids, and ignores that the tuckshop and library already need upgrading for current enrolments, let alone an increase.

I’m calling for:

  • Consultation with the Toowong SS P&C and community, and redeveloping the infrastructure plans to address concerns about developing the lower campus, traffic congestion, and better classroom infrastructure.

A new school for the west side

We were promised a new school opening by 2023 - that got pushed back to 2024, then 2025, and still it’s radio silence. The state government hasn’t even committed to a site yet, despite an extensive tender process in 2023.

We desperately need a funding commitment and timeframe to deliver the new school. You can read more about our campaign for a new school and sign up for updates here
