I’ve introduced a bill to Queensland Parliament to stop new coal and gas. The bill also creates a Climate Transition Authority to ensure a fair deal for resources workers as we phase out fossil fuel exports by 2030, and implement strong emissions reductions.
My bill has been referred to the Parliamentary State Development and Regional Industries Committee for consideration, and their report is due on 15 September 2023. We expect Parliament to debate the Bill sometime in 2024, and we need your help before then to push the major parties to support real climate action and justice for resources workers and communities.
What does the Greens Bill do?
You can find more information, including a copy of the Bill, Explanatory Notes and my introductory speech, here.
In summary, the Bill:
- Bans new coal, oil and gas resources projects in Queensland
- Sets emissions reduction targets in line with current science and the Paris Agreement (75% emissions reduction by 2030 and net zero by 2035)
- Phases out fossil fuel exports by 2030
- Creates a new Queensland Climate Transition Authority, to consult and work with affected workers and communities on a fair transition plan
