A public pool for the inner west

Right now, the inner west does not have a public pool. During our increasingly hot summers, locals have to drive out of the area to get somewhere to cool off.

There used to be a public pool in Toowong, but Council sold it off in 2001. The Greens believe everyone should be able to access a public pool without excessive travel or breaking the bank, which is why we’ve been calling on Council to build an inner west pool for years.

According to the Council's Local Government Infrastructure Plan (LGIP) an aquatic centre is now tentatively planned for a site on Sherwood Road! Unfortunately, it’s proposed for 2031-2036. Not only is this a decade down the track, draft plans in the LGIP have failed to materialise in the past.

That's why I've started a petition calling on the Lord Mayor and local councillors to create a new public pool for Maiwar.

Sign the petition to show how much locals want a local public pool for the inner west.

(Please note this petition is being conducted in conjunction with the Greens campaign for the Walter Taylor Ward, and your details will be shared with that campaign).

PETITION to the Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, Cr Penny Wolff, and Cr Clare Jenkinson:

Currently, the inner west does not have a public pool. Locals are forced to drive out of the area for crucial activities like children's swimming lessons, hydro therapy, or to cool off during the hot summer months.

Access to high-quality public space is essential for a cohesive, well-functioning city. As Brisbane expands to accommodate our growing population, we often see our public spaces sold off to private companies, with new public space rarely acquired. Now is the time to reverse the trend and invest in crucial public facilities.

Your petitioners call on the Brisbane City Council to create a new public pool for the inner west.
