50c fares to the airport: buy back the AirTrain!

Do you think it’s fair that you pay nearly 50 times more for a train to the airport, than for any other Queensland train?

Thanks to a bad privatisation deal announced by Labor and signed by the LNP, our airport train is being held to ransom by an offshore corporation. The 35-year contract bans any other public transport to the airport until 2036, giving Airtrain Citylink Ltd a huge monopoly – so they can rob you blind with sky high prices.

Privatisation has failed. Just 5% of commuters and airport workers use the AirTrain, because it’s too expensive and too infrequent.

It’s time to take control, and put our train back in Queenslanders’ hands. By ending the private contract and bringing the AirTrain into public hands, we could boost train frequency, build more stations, and bring fares down to 50c like the rest of the Translink network.

Analysis of AirTrain's parent company's financial statements value the AirTrain at just $45 million in 2026. The Government should offer this amount as fair compensation to the owners - it would be one of the cheapest transport projects in Queensland's history, securing a crucial public asset ahead of Brisbane 2032.

Sign our petition to force the corporate AirTrain owners to sell up, so we can cut fares to 50c and give Brisbane an airport train every 15 minutes, all day long.

  • With the AirTrain in public hands, set fares at no more than 50c in line with other Translink services and improve the frequency and connectivity of services
