Labor and the LNP are focused on using the Olympics to help developers and property speculators get rich. They’re driving up house prices and rents and selling off our public land – with nothing in return for the people of Brisbane.
Despite spending $15 billion on the Games, their plan includes no new public or affordable homes, no extra public transport projects, and big cuts to our green spaces. The result? When the Olympics arrive in 2032 rents and mortgages will be higher, more Brisbane residents will have been pushed out onto the streets, and our city will be worse off than before.
Every Olympics is a thrill, and residents want the Games to succeed, but right now regular people aren’t invited to the party.
If you believe we need an Olympics for the people, join the campaign today.
Our Olympics for the People campaign is a six year push for a better deal for Queenslanders. Under this banner, we’ll fight for a city we can afford and that we’re proud to live in.
The Olympics should create decent public and affordable homes on public land, better public transport, greener cities, and a better life for locals.
The Paris Olympics delivered 50km of new bike paths, linking different parts of the city to the sporting venues. The Montreal Olympics delivered 20km of new Metro lines, growing the city’s public transport system. And the Barcelona Olympics rehabilitated industrial areas, decontaminating seawater and creating new beaches.
We know we can win real public infrastructure from events like these, because we’ve done it before! Thanks to grassroots campaigns in the 1980s and 90s, Expo88 had a lasting positive legacy, with the creation of South Bank as a beloved public space.
We’re pushing for the same kind of legacy for 2032 – a city that works better for regular people rather than making the rich even richer.
