As a dad to three brilliant kids, I know young minds are an amazing source of innovative and powerful ideas. As the Greens MP for Maiwar, I want to support those ideas however I can.
So in 2018 I created the Maiwarriors grant program, which helps school-age kids fund local social justice and environmental projects. Since then we’ve helped students with dozens of projects to reduce emissions, cut down on waste and learn sustainably.
The Maiwarriors program can provide grants to school-aged students of up to and including $500. We can also assist with administration, promotion and printing to help make the idea a reality.
Some of the projects we’ve helped fund include:
- Recycling bins installed at Rainworth State School
- Materials for the ‘Nude Foods’ club at Fig Tree Pocket State School, which encourages kids and their families to reduce plastic waste
- Installing a Buddy Chair at Toowong State School, which provides a safe and quiet place for students when they need it
- A soft plastics recycling program throughout Milton State School
- Contribution to install solar panels at Ironside State School
- Soil and sleepers for the Rainworth Community Garden
- Purchasing reusable straws for the Fig Tree Pocket tuckshop
- Funding to make Rainworth School Fete waste friendly and more sustainable
