Greens: Indro community ready to fight 45 pokies at the Pig

Locals join Greens MP to fight pokies

6 June 2018

A packed community meeting in Indooroopilly Uniting Church on Tuesday night shows that locals are ready to win the fight against the planned 45 pokies at the Pig n Whistle.

“Last night was really incredible. People are absolutely determined to stop this crazy plan”, said Queensland Greens MP for Maiwar Michael Berkman.

“More than 50 locals came together last night to share strategies, and after that great turnout I’m increasingly confident we can actually stop this shocking proposal.

“The next step is gathering as many objections as possible to the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation, and my office is focussed on that.

“The rules are stacked against ordinary people, but our community has drawn a line in the sand.

“Pokies are addictive and dangerous, but for the super wealthy they’re a $2.3 billion goldmine in Queensland alone.

“Under Labor and the LNP’s existing system, if our community can stop these pokies, they could easily end up somewhere else in South East Queensland.

“We’re saying ‘not in my backyard, and not in anyone’s backyard’.

“Once we stop this disastrous proposal in Indooroopilly, we need to cut the number of pokies in Queensland and get them out of pubs and clubs, as well as opposing Labor’s new casinos.”
