‘Breach bail, go to jail’ will fail - Greens

The Greens will oppose the LNP’s bail laws introduced today. The laws introduce mandatory minimum sentencing, with courts forced to impose at least a one year prison sentence on offenders as young as 10 for particular offences committed while on bail.

Greens MP Michael Berkman:

“‘Breach bail, go to jail’ will fail, just like the rest of the LNP’s rhymes dressed up as policy.

“This is not about victims vs offenders, or hard choices vs human rights, as the government would like to frame it. Queensland’s overcrowded prisons are criminal factories, and when your only plan is to cram more people within their walls, you’ll only produce more crime.

“If you want to improve community safety, you need a plan for what happens outside of prison, where people actually live. The Government has no plan to prevent crime or rehabilitate offenders, all they have is slogans.”
