“Lining their pockets” Qld Greens slam LNP move to allow developer donations

The Greens have labelled the Queensland Government’s plans to allow developer donations a blatant move by the LNP to line their own pockets, slamming their new laws as an undemocratic power grab.

Today in Parliament, the Queensland Attorney General Deb Frecklington tabled a bill that would:

  • remove the ban on property developers donating to political parties for State elections;
  • effectively quadruple the existing donations cap, by changing to an annual cap that can be donated over a four year election cycle; and
  • ban people who are incarcerated for more than a year from voting in Queensland elections.

Quotes attributable to Michael Berkman MP for Maiwar:

“This is a blatant move by the Crisafulli LNP Government to line their own pockets with developer donations, legalising another avenue of corruption in Queensland.

“It’s a kick in the guts for regular people who are desperate for the government to do something about the housing crisis.

“The LNP has rolled out the welcome mat for property developers, selling out ordinary Queenslanders to the highest bidder.

“Allowing developer donations can only benefit developers and the LNP, while everyone else is being priced out of a secure home. The housing crisis won’t be solved by greedy developers, who are more interested in building luxury homes than genuinely affordable, public housing.

“It should come as no surprise that the same political party that is selling off our parks and public land to the highest bidder is now legislating to pocket the profits in the form of corporate donations.

“Removing voting rights from prisoners is an undemocratic dog whistle that shows they have no real interest in rehabilitating offenders.

“The Crisaffuli Government wants to deny people the right to have a say on the system and the political party that’s incarcerating them.
