Greens MP Michael Berkman has welcomed the passage of the bill to decriminalise abortion in Queensland.
“This is a win for choice, and for the generations of brave activists who have been fighting for this historic change for decades.
“It should never be up to us, as men or as legislators to tell women that we know best.
“Despite the misinformation, the Parliament has sent a message: we trust women.
“We know that decriminalisation is not enough. Now abortion is out of our criminal laws, Labor must focus on bringing down high costs and expanding free universal access, especially in regional Queensland.
“Our world-leading universal public healthcare should cover abortion just like any other health issue.
“In my contribution to the Committee’s report I called for stronger safe access zones to protect for patients, family and staff by removing uncertainty in the law. We will now be watching closely to make sure the legislation does the job.
