Indooroopilly Roundabout Upgrade: Letter to Locals

Brisbane City Council is upgrading the notorious Indooroopilly roundabout, which can be confusing, dangerous and hostile to cyclists and pedestrians. I support making it safer and I’m glad Council is progressing this upgrade. Unfortunately, I believe Council’s two proposed options are far too narrow and don’t prioritise public transport, walking and cycling. I also don’t believe Council is offering our community enough input. 


Greens welcome Labor’s step towards removing the toxic influence of big money in politics

Greens MP Michael Berkman has welcomed Queensland Labor’s announcement today that they will cap political donations and expenditure and increase public funding, but called on them to ban all corporate donations and cash-for-access meetings. 


Submission on sale of public land at Stamford Rd Indooroopilly

On 28 October 2019 Michael made a submission to the Queensland Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy about the proposed sale of a 700m2 section of Stamford Rd Indooroopilly. 


Labor’s attack on peaceful protest passes, but climate crisis remains

After Queensland Labor’s laws cracking down on peaceful protest passed the Queensland Parliament, the Greens urged the government to act on climate change rather than dragging Queensland back to the Joh era.

Speech on the Civil Liability and Other Legislation Amendment Bill

On Tuesday 22 October 2019, Michael gave a speech on the government's Civil Liability and Other Legislation Amendment Bill. Michael had separately introduced his own Private Members Bill called  Civil Liability (Institutional Child Abuse) Amendment Bill 2018. On 22 October 2019, just before debate on the government's bill commenced, the government announced that they would amend their own Bill to include some key changes which Michael had proposed in his Bill. This was a significant win for survivors and advocates, and it's thanks to their hard work over many years. Speech on cross bench resourcing

Proper resourcing for of cross-bench MPs is important for democracy. Cross bench MPs play a vital role in our democracy. On 22 October 2019, Michael gave a speech calling for adequate resourcing for cross-bench MPs. As of October 2019, the government has 217 staff, the Opposition has 22, and the cross bench has none. The speech focussed on a motion proposing to take cross bench resourcing out of the hands of the Premier and put it into the hands of the Queensland Independent Remuneration Tribunal.
