Maiwarriors get chance to chill out

Toowong State School students in need of some quiet or me time can now do just that thanks to a grant from their local MP to build a Buddy Chair.

The chair will be a place to escape the hustle and bustle of the playground in a designated Quiet Place.

While ideal for children with Asperger’s or other conditions, any student could use the bench, TSS teacher Cameron Miller said.

“Sometimes, children just need another person to help or talk through their challenges. That is the main purpose of the bench,’’ he said.

State Greens MP for Maiwar, Michael Berkman, said the $500 grant was small, but important for children.

“As a dad, I know young minds are an amazing source of innovative and powerful ideas,’’ he said.

“Far too often these ideas are sidelined or never come to fruition because of financial barriers. I decided to use a chunk of my electorate budget to help these ideas become reality through these ‘Maiwarrior’ grants.’’
